The Iron Lady (2011)

Oscar win

Come for Streep’s award-winning performance as Margaret Thatcher … stay for Streep’s award-winning performance as Margaret Thatcher. The transformation for the actress not only works due to her talent, but also thanks to the Academy-Award-winning work done by the makeup team.

Lions for Lambs (2007)

Streep leads this idea-driven drama as a journalist who worries that her interview with a presidential hopeful (Tom Cruise) is more propaganda than a real news story. Robert Redford directs and stars, marking his reunion with Streep after 1985’s Out of Africa.

She-Devil (1989)

The actress is in comic mode in this darkly funny film. Roseanne Barr shares leading lady duties, playing a woman who seeks revenge after her husband (Ed Begley, Jr.), begins an affair with a romance novelist.

Ironweed (1987)

Oscar nomination

This Depression-era drama pairs Streep with another acting giant in Jack Nicholson. He plays an aging ex-baseball player (and current alcoholic), while she is his longtime girlfriend. Nicholson also earned an Oscar nomination for his part.

Still of the Night (1982)

Streep reunites with her Kramer vs. Kramer director Robert Benton for this thriller built in the Hitchcock mold. She plays the mysterious blond investigated by a psychiatrist (Jaws‘ Roy Scheider), who is looking into the death of one of his patients.

The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981)

Oscar nomination

This British romantic drama pairs her with Jeremy Irons, as the actors play actors playing lovers in this Oscar nominee based on John Fowles’ novel. Playwright Harold Pinter netted an Oscar nomination for the creative adaptation.

Want more Meryl? Might we recommend Florence Foster Jenkins, Julie & Julia, Doubt, The Devil Wears Prada, The Hours, Adaptation, One True Thing, Marvin’s Room, The Bridges of Madison County, The River Wild, Death Becomes Her, Defending Your Life, Heartburn, Out of Africa, Silkwood, Sophie’s Choice, Kramer vs. Kramer, or The Deer Hunter? Basically, you can pick anything she appears in. Even if the film is imperfect, she’s always entirely watchable and often the best part of the movie.
