True Grit (2010)

Charlize Theron is bristly and watchably unlikable in this Jason Reitman film as a YA writer who returns to her hometown to seduce her (married) former love (Patrick Wilson). Young Adult is darkly funny, but it doesn’t spare its heroine any criticism–and she deserves every bit.
Oldboy (2003)

Park Chan-wook’s revenge thriller features killer action, perfect cinematography, and a haunting story that will be hard to shake for some viewers. Watch it (or rewatch it), but make sure that you’re not having dumplings for dinner. Actually, just don’t watch it while you’re eating, okay?
The Machinist (2004)
Christian Bale’s physical transformation gets most of the buzz (and it’s well deserved), but don’t overlook the taut direction from Brad Anderson. The Machinist is nightmarish in the best of ways.
Blue Velvet (1986)

Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2012)
This charming comedy starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms walks the line between indie film and mainstream comedy. It has broad appeal, but still carries the signature quirk of its directors, Mark and Jay Duplass.
A Fish Called Wanda (1988)

At once smart and sublimely silly, this comedy features a brilliant performance from Kevin Kline (that deservedly earned him an Oscar). It melds a caper with a romantic comedy, and every joke hits.
