Shantaram is an EPIC novel and one of the best books I have read in a long time. The story follows the author’s escape from Australian jail and onto a plane bound for Bombay, India. He begins a new life, first living in the slums as a doctor and eventually getting deeply involved with the Bombay mafia.
Without giving away too much I can tell you that this novel has some of everything: twists, humor, crime, family, war, betrayal and love are all in this 950-page behemoth. There are some cool philosophical insights on right vs. wrong. Underground Bombay is vividly envisioned and the characters are extremely colorful. Oh, and its based on the true crazy events of the author’s life.
“It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.”
That’s how you start a book.
There is talk of a Shantaram movie as well: Warner Brothers has bought rights to the story for $2 million at the request of Johnny Depp.
Overall, awesome read. Check it here: Shantaram.
