If you’re renting a small space in an urban setting for your company and you just need your computer and a desk and a bit of privacy, there is a solution.

One of the furniture items in the just-concluded six-day Milan Furniture Fair, was the Hug Pod, from Fantoni Spa.

We’re all familiar with the dreaded cubicle office the cartoon character Dilbert slaved in, those five-foot high cloth and metal dividers providing space for your desk, your computer and a chair. A few of us have sat in those, decorating the sterile enviroments with with pictures of family.

The Hug Pod is the 21st Century version of that.

The Hug Pod can be configured to even a smaller version of the dreaded Dilbert cubicle or it can be expanded into an office with two comfortable couches- the same colour as its soundproof walls- giving you the the ability to interview and converse in your cubicle office with a table between you for your cups of coffee or your laptops. Dibert couldn’t do that.

The Hug Pod is a cubicle with warm fuzzies. Everything old is new again.

Another exhibitor was from the brand name, [More] an innovative fine furniture company out of Hamburg, Germany. The company prides itself on not just design, but the emotion furniture design evokes.

One [More] designed desk featured was the Cala. It is more sculpture than desk, a kidney-shaped brown walnut solid wood desk standing on two curved V-shaped legs.

The Cala’s curves won’t fit in the corner of any room, but the Cala looks trés beautiful. (That’s European for you’re gonna love it.) The Cala is actually the most beautiful desk I’ve ever seen, not including anything made with drawers. If you want to get creative after buying one, don’t paint it red or it will look like an infected kidney. Keep it as is.

The Milan Furniture Show, or Salone Internazionale del Mobile, has been displaying fine European furniture annually since 1961.
