The United States has imposed sanctions on former army chief General (Retd) Aziz Ahmed and his family members for alleged involvement in corruption in Bangladesh.

The US State Department announced the decision of the Biden administration on Monday afternoon local time (Tuesday morning Bangladesh time).

General Aziz and his family members are ineligible to enter the United States, according to a statement published on the State Department’s website.

The statement made it clear that the action against General (retd) Aziz Ahmed reaffirms the US commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and the rule of law in Bangladesh.

In this country, the government services are more transparent and the way to reach the citizens’ doorsteps is widened.

Along with that, the issue of US assistance in anti-corruption efforts in Bangladesh by improving the business and control system and increasing the capacity to ensure the investigation and prosecution of money laundering and other economic crimes was revealed.

Former General (retd) Aziz Ahmed, due to his involvement in massive corruption, was quoted as saying in a statement by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

Formerly the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh, Department of State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs are included under section 7031(c) of the Appropriations Act. As a result, Aziz Ahmed and his family members were ineligible to enter the United States.
