Corruption of revenue officer Matiur Rahman in Bangladesh: Orders to freeze bank accounts of family members have been issued

The order was issued following a request by the Anti-Corruption Commission investigating corruption allegations against Matiur Rahman

Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) and Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission have ordered to freeze the bank accounts and Beneficiary Owner (BO) accounts of retired revenue officer Matiur Rahman and his family members on corruption charges

Today, BFIU has written to managing directors and chief executive officers of state-owned and private banks in the country asking them to freeze the accounts of Matiur and his family members for 30 days.

Banks have also been directed to provide details of these accounts to the unit within the next five working days.
A senior BFIU official told The Business Standard that a decision will be taken after getting all the information from the bank accounts

Meanwhile, the securities market regulator has directed Central Depository Bangladesh Limited to freeze the BO accounts of Motiur and his family members

The list of seized accounts includes names of Matiur Rahman, his first wife Laila Kaniz, children of first wife Farzana Rahman Ispita and Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman Arnab, Matiur’s second wife Shammi Akhtar Shibli, children of second wife Iftema Rahman Madhubi, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifti and second wife. Irfanur Rahman Irfan.

Matiyur is alleged to have misused his senior position in the National Board of Revenue over the years and amassed assets worth hundreds of crores of rupees, including financial and real estate assets

Earlier this week, National Board of Revenue Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal President Matiur Rahman, who was also a member of the board, was removed from his post.

Matiyur’s alleged corruption came to light after his son Ifat posted a picture on social media of a sacrificial goat he claimed to have bought for Rs 15 lakh, raising questions about the NBR official’s earnings.
