Chhatra League leaders and activists attacked students protesting for quota reform at Jahangirnagar University (JAB) in Bangladesh. Students said that the attack took place in the area adjacent to Bangabandhu Hall under the leadership of Chhatra League branch president Akhtaruzzaman Sohel.

It was reported that more than half a hundred students were injured in the attack till 9:30 pm. Dr. Rezwanur Rahman of the University Medical Center said that more than half a hundred students received treatment by 8:30 pm. As the condition of 20 of them is critical, they have been sent to different private hospitals in Savar

The agitating students said that they started the march from the central library of the university at 6:30 pm under the banner of anti-discrimination student movement. When the procession reached Battala area after circling various roads, members of Chhatra League led by branch president Akhtaruzzaman Sohel attacked them with indigenous weapons

Some of the injured students have been identified. They are Mahfuz Islam (Megh) of Environmental Science Department, Abdur Rashid (Jitu) of Bangabandhu Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture, Mosaddekur Rahman, University representative of Jugantar newspaper and General Secretary Habibur Rahman Liton. Injured journalist Mosaddekur Rahman said that BCL workers hit him on the head with a stick while performing his professional duties. Injured student Mahfuz Islam Megh said that our peaceful procession led by the Chhatra League president was attacked. They threw mud at us, kicked us. Many people including me were injured

Denying the attack, BCL branch president Akhtaruzzaman Sohel said, “We did not attack.” We went to talk to them. They attacked us, in which several of our members were injured

When the agitators chased them around 8:30 pm, the BCL leaders took shelter in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. At that time, when the BCL activists started throwing bricks and stones from the roof of the hall, the protesting students gathered in front of the hall

At 9:40 pm, the protesting students stayed for a while at the central Shaheed Minar of the university. Then they marched to the residence of Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Nurul Alam and took a stand
