Hi everyone! As most of your guy/girls know, currently I do my master’s study at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden in MSc, Software engineering and Technology. Now, the first period is passed (which means that half of the semester is passed) and I have some experience want to share (in short) and keep it in the blog as a reminder.

However, before starting my story, let take a look for some information about Chalmers.

What is Chalmers

Chalmers University of Technology is one of the best engineering and science universities in Sweden. It has two campuses located in Gothenburg city which are Johanneberg and Lindholmen. Chalmers University of Technology was founded in 1982 and the university was named by the first contributor, William Chalmers who is one of the owners of Swedish East India Company.

Lindholmen campus which I usually be here.

Currently, Chalmers has 13 departments with 10,300 full-time students and 3,100 employees (including Ph.D. Student). Chalmers also aims for a sustainable future which can me found additional information here.

Now, you already know a little bit about Chalmers. Are you ready to know my experience? Swipe down and ready it!

Study life

Introduction class of DAT321 Software Quality

One twos thing that surprised me for study life is the structure of the study and the value of feedback.

Normally, in one academic year, you will have two-semester, fall and spring, but in Sweden, they split each semester into two quarters. Each subject will start and end within a quarter. That means you can focus more because the number of the class is half lower compare to normal study structure.

Me on project presentation day

Each class has a feedback mechanic call “Student representative” Student representative is a student (mostly volunteer) who will observe and collect feedback about the course. Each course will have three student representative meeting, The first and second will happen locally with the teacher and the last meeting will be a formal meeting which has some people from the office and student union. Furthermore, during the introduction section of each class, the lecturer and examinator will show the last year’s feedback, including the improvement of this year. This impresses me a lot and makes me feel that my feedback will create an impact.

Note: I also be a student representative of one course in this quarter. However, all of the process do not done yet. If I already be in the last meeting I will write another blog that only specially in student representative.

Life in city

Gothenburg is the 2nd biggest city in Sweden, however, it does not feel too big. Since all of the areas in the city cover by public transportation, so you can travel very convenient and fast from point A to point B.

Cityscape of Gothenburg

Note: One thing you need to know is the bus driver does not sell the ticket. You have to purchase the ticket in advance from a convenience store or online via Västtrafik To Go apps, see details here. However, some tram has an automatic ticket machine in which you can also buy the ticket there.

You also have many activities that you can do, walking in Haga, visit some historical place, museum hopping or having fun in the fun park. Moreover, Gothenburg is one of the famous cities for the event. Therefore, it has many big events in entire years.

My impression

One thing that impresses me a lot since I have been here is how Swedish value Equality. Back to orientation day, it has speech with focus mainly on Diversity, Discriminate, Racism and Tolerance. You can learn more here.

Picture on orientation day.

The first word that coming to my mind is “WOW”. I would say that here might only a place that you will feel how the wold “Equality” is. Trust me, you will feel safe here which will reduce a chance to be “homesick” for you.

Last but not lease

I have seldom time written a blog in english. Therefore, I have to apologize in advance for wrong gramma and spelling.

If you have any question about Chalmers or life in Sweden. Feel free to contact me in any channel that you want.

One more thing. If you like this blog, don’t forget to share it in any social media.
