On 14th February, KASA (Kibera Aeronautics and Space Academy) conducted a session with 13 learners on solar energy. The class was organized using the funds we received from the recent crowdfunding — we managed to source $387 from the crowdfunding.

The aim of the class was to introduce learners to renewable energy, with a focus on solar energy, help them think by themselves about solar energy, and come up with solutions to the local energy challenges. To achieve our goal, we organized for an interactive, activity-based session — less theory, more practicals. The facilitators made sure that the learners spent more time in group discussions and practice creating and fixing stuff.

To kick off the sessions, the learners got involved in a space-themed drawing session. During the session, the learners drew, presented, and explained their drawings to their fellow learners.

We used the crowdfunding contributions to buy a solar panel and solar battery to install on Tunapanda Institute’s roof. During the session, the learners learnt in detail about solar panels and batteries. They even got involved in the practical installation of the solar setup.

Delivering the session was in line with our micro-course ‘Energy sources of the future’ which fosters to create awareness and involve learners in renewable energy generation and consumption. ‘Energy sources of the future’ introductory course can be found here.
