Kenya Event platform
Kenya is a country located in the eastern parts of Africa with its coastline bracing the Indian ocean. Home to a vast wildlife all the big five presents its inland consists of broad plains and many hills. The Great Rift Valley characterizes the Central and Western region’s homes to two of Africa‘s highest mountains, Mount Kenya and Mount Elgon. Nairobi being the capital city of Kenya with other major cities Mombasa in the coastal region, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Malindi and smaller cities with them having less than 200,000 people in the population.
The name Kenya has many speculations of its origins. One outstanding to me is that it’s linked to the Embu, Kamba and Kikuyu words Kirinyaga, and Kirenyaa and Kiinyaa which mean “God’s resting place” in all three languages. According to a recent list of African countries GDP, Kenya is among the top 10 countries economies leading East-Africa in both communications, finance and transportation.
The main languages used among the residence are Kiswahili (Swahili) and English. The youth, however, have their own slang known as “Sheg”. This is a cant that is a mix of English and Swahili words.
The county is widely known for its Matatu culture. These are the main means of public transportation in the county. The matatus fill the city playing loud music; each matatu louder than the next one. The exterior of the matatus is usually drawn in graffiti-style artwork, custom designs, flashy lights and onboard entertainment complete with screens to attract passengers.
The food among the people in Nairobi is also quite diverse. This has been influenced by the different traditional foods from the different tribes and nationalities in the county. There are a number of traditional food restaurants in the county as well as fast food restaurants that serve fries commonly known as “chips” among the youth. There has been a growth in the number of foreigners setting up restaurants that serve foreign foods such as Indian, Chinese and continental cuisine.
