Self-esteem refers to how highly or lowly you regard yourself in terms of worthiness or value. It is how highly or lowly you love or like yourself. When you love yourself you take good care of you and others.

High or low self-esteem plays a very important role in determining the progress of your life and productivity. It affects how you perform, communicate, interact or participate in activities.

Effects of self-esteem

Self-esteem is closely related to factors like life experience, happiness, confidence, initiatives, relationships, job performance, and career progress.

When you regard and interpret yourself well, you feel good for yourself. You become more motivated.

Low self-esteem

This is when you feel so bad about yourself i.e. you hate yourself. People with low self-esteem feel uncomfortable with life, awkward, incompetent and unloved. This situation reduces the quality of one’s life leading to feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, and shame.

This situation increases the risks of not fulfilling the true potential in life. Those who are in this situation, don’t take initiative to set and pursue personal goals.

High self-esteem

This is when you love yourself much, you respect yourself better and you feel comfortable with whatever life you have. High self-esteem improves your emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence -Refers to the way we manage emotions; both our emotions and emotions of others. People who manage their emotions well live happily and progress smoothly in their areas of interest. They cope up well with others. Their relationship with others is good.

What can you do to improve your self-esteem

  • Reconnect with what you love most and take positive actions. Make commitments to enjoy what you love most.
  • Have a positive image of yourself.
  • Remember you have the power to do, be or have anything you desire. Focus on the beauty and joy around you.
  • Spend time with people who help you feel happy and comfortable about yourself
  • Share ideas, progress, and problems with people you love most; who will help you improve on what you love or better your life.
  • Practice self-acceptance. Accept who you are.
