This years Nairobi innovation week involved a global event whose theme is “Innovating for a Better Tomorrow.”

What is Innovation?

Innovation is the change that unlocks new values.

It is the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, articulated needs, or existing market needs. It is all about building and embedding development process in the society and is designed for everyone and from any discipline.” The disciplines can be either medicine, technology, agriculture, business or music industries.

The innovation week brings partners and members of the innovation ecosystem together and those interested to give support with an aim of providing a platform for innovators to show-casing their innovations. It is a great meeting point for creative people. Great place to meet people from various places, hear and enjoy new ideas, interactions and innovation experiences. Giving out new innovative ideas is one way of solving our society problems.

Workshop

Tunapanda Institute, partnering with C4DLab and The Embassy of Finland in Nairobi, as a continuation of the CodeBus Africa Project had a chance to organize a workshop at the UoN Towers on 7th March 2018. The main aim of the workshop was to help young girls and boys to approach technology in an intuitive way by linking programming with creative self-expression.

The workshop curriculum was developed by Finnish technology Education Initiative Mehackit, and adapted in a co-creative manner to serve learners of different age and proficiency level in each of the CodeBus workshop.

The session was very successful with over 60 high school students from various places. 36 students were girls and 15 students were boys; 21 students from St Christine community centre, 20 students from KGSA Foundation Kibera, 10 from Mogra Children’s Centre Mathare. We had other people who were coming in and others were volunteers who wanted to learn what CodeBus Africa can do.

The stage branded Tunapanda institute with Tunapanda team everywhere energetic, enthusiastic and ready to run the PowerOnTheHour slot organised students and guests into workable groups.

Sonic Pi is a software that helps you learn about both computing and music through play and experimenting. It encourages you to have fun and before you know it you’ll have learned how to code, compose and perform. It enables you write and modify code live to make music, just like the way you might perform live with a guitar.

The Photographers from Tunapanda Institute Were busy taking photos while students were busy creating songs. Later, playing the songs created by the students the stage was changed into the dancing floor. The stage mood well captured, everyone in the room felt it like a natural place to do sonic Pi. The students enjoyed the session making it more successful.

Remember apart from music being majorly informative and entertaining, it entails business and innovation. This could go a long way in solving the problems in our communities especially unemployment crisis in Kenya and Africa at large. Locally, this is in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030 while globally, it would contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Tunapanda institute will continue working together with Embassy of Finland “CodeBus” through facilitated workshops to train and distribute Sonic Pi skills.
