Sophie the Giraffe was born on May 25th, 1961, Saint Sophie’s day, and has been bringing babies comfort ever since. Her design was created to stimulate the five senses. Among these design elements are the dark and contrasting spots that provide visual stimulation to babies’ developing eyesight. Sophie’s soft bumps are designed for teething and comfort, while her size and shape are easy for babies to grasp. Sophie is also very flexible and has many parts for babies to chew (ears, horns, legs) to further help soothe babies’ sore gums. Her squeaker keeps babies amused, stimulates their hearing, and is easily recognizable, teaching them cause and effect.
How Sophie the Giraffe is made
Only two simple ingredients go into making every Sophie the Giraffe: 100% all-natural rubber derived from the Hevea tree and food-grade vegan dye. Sophie the Giraffe is still “traditionally” produced using more than 14 manual steps. Once the natural, waterproof liquid rubber is poured and “rotomolded”, the manual process begins and Sophie’s bright colors and spots are hand applied in France. Each step ensures the highest quality standards are met.
