This is a valid question that comes to the minds of a few parents when they come across coding for kids. Parents might say that their kids are too young to think about what they want to be when they grow up. Maybe, they want to become a dancer or a singer or an artist. Thinking of becoming a programmer is too far fetched for kids. They are too young to think about what kind of career they want to pursue.

Yes, that is true!

But understanding the fundamentals of computer science and technology is not only for tech-savvy kids or kids who would want to take computer science jobs in the future.

Our future generations are going to see a different world where technology and automation will be taking away maintenance jobs and millions of jobs would emerge in the field of computer science. The world will need thousands and millions of programmers to develop software for running on smart devices and creating automation systems.

But, apart from the necessity of the digital age, there are three more important reasons why kids should be taught coding.

1. Give kids the opportunity to understand the world around them

First, kids should learn to program so that they understand the world around them. The world is going digital. Today we use technology to fulfill our daily lives needs from the comfort of our homes but gradually the education system will transform and become digital where kids will learn from teachers all around the world. Kids need to understand the applications and algorithms running around them.

2. Empower kids to be creative

Second and one of the most exciting reasons is that programming is very creative. It is a means of self-expression. You can draw, you can create music, you can create games and animations. There is lots of imagination involved and creativity is a skill which we would really want to give to our kids. After all, the power of making something is huge!

3. Make kids confident problem solvers

Thirdly, it helps develop problem-solving and logical reasoning in kids. They learn to break down problems and think critically. They learn math and communication skills. It turns them into confident problem solvers and helps develop foundational skills for the 21st century in our kids.

Coding is just like any other language and should be taught to all kids regardless of their age and gender. The earlier they are exposed to a new language, the faster and easier the learning process is. So, give your kids a gift of creativity, make them the problem-solvers, and provide them with an opportunity to understand the world they live in.
