[Update 02/11/2020] In a rather unpleasant — but not totally unexpected — turn of events, the company behind PlateStation announced that they are canceling all orders of the PS5 faceplates they were selling through the CustomizeMyPlates.com website. Sony’s lawyers argue that the detachable faceplates are part of the company’s PS5-related intellectual property and that it would be illegal for these unofficial ones to be sold anywhere in the world. Customers that had already ordered them are refunded and the whole thing seems to be over. Whether Sony will let anyone else sell custom faceplates for the PlayStation5 — it’s now certain that the company will offer official ones at some point — remains to be seen.

This was heavily rumored ever since a couple of Sony employees have promised that “the new PlayStation will be more customizable than ever before” back in June, but the company’s impressive teardown recently made it official: the two wing-shaped faceplates that make up most of PS5’s case are removable so they can obviously be replaced with different ones.
