She was an inspiration for her honest and subtle feminist songs, and a public example of the power of misogyny.

Gimme a beat….

Janet Jackson is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the release of her 3rd studio album, Control. It was a huge commercial success, and paved the way for every other solo female pop artist who wanted to maintain creative control of their work and public persona.

In celebration of Janet’s work, and the 35th anniversary of the release of Control and its contribution to culture, I ranked her 10 best songs.

I was a huge fan of Janet Jackson, and in middle school when Control was released. The synthesizer beats, along with songs about young love and being in control of your own life as a woman really resonated with me.

In February, Control topped the billboard charts at number one, again, after 35 years. Although, some media are reporting this as a story about Justin Timberlake’s half-hearted public apology, and renewed interest in Janet’s work as a result. This is actually false. The 35th anniversary, and subsequent nods to Janet have been spreading on social media for some time.

Janet’s Instagram is full of the love.
