The Best Books I Read This Month
And why I recommend them
I started this year with a goal to read less. But, I actually read a lot more books than usual this month!
Nonetheless, I have found so much joy in reading lately. I have discovered so many fantastic books, and I’ve also reread some of my all-time favorite stories. All in all, January was a great reading month.
Here are the best books I read this month:
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
Genre: Memoir
Crying in H Mart is an emotional memoir about grief and belonging. The book details Zauner’s growing up as a Korean American and having a troubled relationship with her mother in adolescence. At 25, her mother gets diagnosed with cancer, and she moves back to care for her.
The memoir is so incredibly moving; I teared up several times while I listened to the audiobook, narrated by the author herself.
At times, this memoir felt like reading a diary. It gives such a raw and detailed account of someone’s life, without sugarcoating the ugly sides of grief and the mistakes people make. Food is also a big part of the story, as it’s Zauner’s way to cope with stress, feel closer to her mother, and connect with her Korean heritage.
