Even though I am in the southern hemisphere, July always feels like summer for me. And the best part of summer for me growing up? The opportunity to devour new favorite books.

Here are a few books I’m reading this month, from literary fiction to sci-fi and fantasy:

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett

Genre: Contemporary Fiction

The gorgeous Tom Lake book cover and sprayed edges. I don’t normally pick up hardcovers but I couldn’t resist when I saw this in my local independent bookstore. (photos by the author)

In the wake of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return home. As they pick cherries on their farm, Lara shares some of the stories of her youth, before becoming a mother. These stories include ones she never thought she would share with her daughters, such as her whirlwind romance with Peter Duke while performing in a theater company at Tom Lake.

I found the most gorgeous edition of this book at a local independent bookstore in Auckland, New Zealand and couldn’t help but pick it up. I started reading Tom Lake earlier this week and immediately fell in love with the nostalgic and reflective writing style. It is a slower-paced read though, so hopefully I can…
