A promising start and an oddly paced story.

3 Body Problem introduces us to a number of scientists who must figure out a way to work together to save humanity… or at least try.

This Netflix show is based on a trilogy by Chinese author Liu Cixin. I haven’t read these books, but I am curious how the novels handle this complex and layered story. The eight-episode series has a lot going on, so it’s no surprise to me that the source material is a trilogy.

The premise of 3 Body Problem is really interesting and features a number of scientists in different disciplines trying to solve some of our world’s biggest problems. The show also hits on a number of sci-fi staples, some of which are really relevant to our world today.

In the first episode, we see glimpses of the past and the present and how there is more connecting these two very different eras than we might expect. In 2024, scientists are dying in gruesome and horrifying ways. At the same time, scientistic phenomena have appeared that shatter our conceptions of reality. There are a lot of interesting threads for the show to go down.

Unfortunately, the great momentum and mystery at the beginning of 3 Body Problem starts to wane toward the end of the season.
