I Finally Watched ‘Narcos’ Season One

Narcos takes us into the world of Colombian drug trafficking and the DEA agents who seek to stop the cartels.

What makes this show especially wild is that it’s based on a true story. This isn’t a documentary, but the show does draw on facts from the actual case. And the events depicted in this show are absolutely bonkers.

In the first season, we track Pablo Escobar’s (Wagner Moura) rise to become Colombia’s most notorious drug trafficker. It’s really fascinating to watch his journey over the season. At the start of his rise, he has more money than he knows what to do with, so he invests some of his ill-gotten gains in building houses and restoring poorer parts of Medellín. Initially, he is a beloved member of the community, even though he is involved in the cocaine industry that is plaguing the city.

Over time, Pablo begins to seek political power. He wants to be in the Colombian government. He wants to be president someday — an ambition that is quickly squashed. As Pablo gains more wealth and power, he starts to spiral further out of control.

The pressure on Pablo ramps up over time with DEA agents Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) and Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) hot on his trail. They are willing to do…
