Broadcast is a traditional way of telling news. It is usually done on TV in a wrap where you have your anchor, reporter, interviews, then soc-out.

What I like about broadcast videos is that there is a reporter who speaks throughout the video unlike social videos where you have to read throughout the video. In my opinion, the way people are interviewed and the way reporters write into these videos are far more effective than how the interviews are placed in social videos after hearing the music that plays along with these videos and the text on the screen.

Here’s a good example of a traditional broadcast story: Shalane Flanagan, Geoffrey Kamworor win TCS New York City Marathon.

Social videos have subtitles for a very convenient reason. It is known that most people on social platforms don’t click the video for sound when scrolling. Instead they can read the subtitles without having to hear it in the video.

It is convenient especially if your in a quiet place and don’t have headphones. Also social videos are often shown as slideshows where each clip has writing; telling a story. In a social video that is done well, there will not be too much writing on one clip.

The writing will be easy to read and compliments the video. Social video can have narration but the writing can take the place of that and a reporter. Social videos also allow for creativity throughout the video. For example, on Instagram there is a voting poll, you can highlight the text when you’re writing on a clip, boomerang, hyperlapse and so on. Snapchat there are filters you could use and also emojis draw attention. Social videos can be more fun to watch if done effectively compared to traditional broadcasting.

Social video is slowly taking the place of the traditional broadcasting news. Most people take to social media for their news rather than watching TV.

It’s convenient since a lot of people spend majority of their day on different social media platforms to see what their friends are doing and posting about and sharing their day, so why not get your news there too while you’re at it. I believe that both news telling styles are effective and really depends on the individual and how they choose to get their news.
