I still remember the new year's night of 2000; we are about to change from one century to another. We were the first millennials with all the technology boom, having facilities of internet and access to global content. We witnessed global celebrations and watched events on TV and the internet. Not only Bollywood, but Hollywood also created the hype of the century through songs and movies, they used stencils and block to write 2000 in the background of some dancing folks. Everyone was excited about what will happen in the coming century, and it did change the world all over, do you know how? Let’s dig out!

We belong to Pakistan, a country of the third world, that introduced the latest technologies always at the end of global recognition. The Internet and technology were globally introduced in the 80s, the Generation Y started growing in the Internet era which was later termed millennials. However, we welcomed the internet in our late 90s so technically we are the late millennials. Before the internet and technology, we had a life, a life we enjoyed. We had friends and we used to play outside our houses. I still remember those days when we had a proper routine which included playing sports in the sports ground, in the streets and we used to meet people, the real people.

The first computer I saw was a Pentium 3 PC, a “Personal Computer”, a personal computer which was used by all family members. Starting my days with the computer was playing Solitaire or trying to write some codes on GW-Basic. Well, as our personal computer was used by all family members, we had limited time to spend on the computer. The Internet was slow and got disconnected each time someone pulls up the telephone receiver. Yes, that was the grossest thing one could ever do to us.

As I told earlier that we were the late millennials, so we were not that much familiar with these technologies, and instead, we enjoyed our lives. We played outside, saw the world, met some great friends, had physical activities, and most important we took a breath in the fresh air. But this generation, which came after us, really grew up with technology. In the past 20 years, technology had a great hike, and screens shrink to the size of our palms. Kids these days have their personal tablets, which are actually personal, separate for each one. Everyone has their own laptops, and the outside world becomes a channel on YouTube.

Everything comes with a cost, and technology had its cost too. Where it eased life, it also created troubles, from spoiling the environment to sabotaging the new generation and limiting their boundaries. I will not recommend my kids to go outside and play, we have not let the environment remain as it was at our times. Kids these days will also not prefer to go outside instead they spend their time on the internet. In short, if they want to go outside and play, they will start playing Minecraft or Roblox.

At this turn of the century, where we cannot minus technology from our lives, what we can do is the positively utilization of technology. We can teach our children that there are hundreds of positive usages of laptops, tablets, mobiles, and especially the internet. Now it’s our turn to teach our coming generation what we could not learn when we were introduced to the internet. We can make the real outside world for our millennials.
