Mark, Jesse, and me at Clef Cooks 100

Tonight will be the first Wednesday in 135 weeks that we haven’t hosted a Clef Cooks dinner. We’re switching the event to a monthly schedule, so now it’ll be on the first Wednesday of every month instead of every week. These dinners have been a weekly ritual and huge part of our lives, so the change is bittersweet.

Clef Cooks has been a wonderful refuge in the middle of every week, a reminder to step back from our work and enjoy the people around us. We’ve built an incredible community of folks who have made the event such a warm and pleasant experience every week. When we moved to Oakland, we didn’t have any friends here. But we had a kitchen, and we figured that if we made some food, maybe we would be able to make some friends. Almost 3 years later, we’ve made a lot of food, and so many friends.

Both Oakland mayors have come to a Clef Cooks, as have firefighters, community activists, and pirates. We’ve learned a lot about the city we’ve come to love and where we’re building Clef. Clef Cooks has helped us find avenues to engage with the city and understand our obligation to the people who were here before us. It has helped shape us as people and the company we’ve built.

It’s also a lot of work to feed ~25 people every week, and not just from us. The Port has been an amazing partner in hosting Clef Cooks, even after we outgrew our office there. They’ve supported all of our work and let us keep coming back every week to make dinner. But as our team and The Port have both continued to grow, we’ve realized that a monthly event will be more sustainable. It’ll let us maintain so much of what’s made the event special, even as we grow and change as a company.

So, if you were planning to come to dinner tonight, join us next week (May 4th) instead. And if you haven’t been to a Clef Cooks yet, but want to come, reach out and I’ll be happy to send you more info. Thank you everyone who’s come to Clef Cooks and helped us make an incredible 135 dinners, and here’s to many more.
