Why was Crest Cafe developed?

For us protecting our oceans is not a lofty concept, but a fundamental part in the life we live. Our goal is to create a seaside atmosphere of serenity and peace, while also having a focus on the support of our oceans and the habitats within them. We hope to educate people of the small but significant efforts every establishment can take part in to support those less fortunate.

| What is Crest Cafe?

Crest Café is a beach front environmentally constructed, surf snack shop located in Greenport ,Long Island. Our overall menu is focused on vegan health food. This includes to-go meals and snacks surfers can grab on the go after a surf. This café is built out of recycled materials and sits above the sand to allow habitats to be created under the building’s structure. Every week a focus of the café is to educate passing individuals in the area with environmental education workshops and beach cleanup events. At these affairs individuals can pay a small fee for vegan tasting sessions during the events. We also have a small surf shop with recycled material-built items from small local businesses (surf boards, wet suits, sea safe sunscreen, etc).

Audience

Crest Café not only wants to attract the happy-go-lucky locals and vacationers looking for an eco-friendly and sustainability focused restaurant, but also the passing individuals that might not have thought to in-depthly about how they're carefree, but environmentally dangerous lifestyle is effecting the habitats around them.

| How Crest Cafe came to be.

The developmentation for Crest Café really started focusing on my interests and how my childhood shaped the way I want to add to the world. I want to develop the sustainable and environmentally friendly side of society that needs some assistance is laying groundwork around the world.

| Name Development

When developing the name I needed to steer clear of a focus on ocean animal life and non friendly names focusing on the harming of these sea creatures as many seaside restaurants have in their names. Instead I closed in more on nature friendly words to really describe an onlookers experience by the ocean.

| Logo Development

The logo was the tricky part as there have been many variations of wave like icons and images to symbolize a seaside establishment. In order to make my own I took inspiration from those and created a new shape to represent a similar ocean oasis idea.

| What is the “look”of Crest Café?

When I began the process of composing the brand concept and the visual design aspects of the brand I began to look for inspiration through environmentally focused brands and physical establishments. This started the process of the ocean, paired with a raw and natural feeling leading to the main colors of blue, tan, and white; with other variations mixed in. Additionally, the illustrative elements backboned the colors, focused on the ocean’s natural side with waves, animals, and simple shapes.

| Brand Deliverables

Since my cafe focused so heavily on environmentally friendly alternatives this limited my deliverable options. I decided to go with take out containers, the exterior and interior, accessories such as glass jars, tote. bags, aprons, and a shirt. I wanted to bring out the café aspect of the restaurant while also sticking to the main focus which is sustainability and environmental impact.

| Brand Deliverables Continued…

When further designing the brand deliverables I began thinking of the supporting elements to the main to-go boxes. I wanted to focus these on the elements that can assist in continuing customers sustainability journey even when you leave the café.

Shirt Design

| Environmental Elements

To continue with the restaurant’s visually simple, but ocean nature focused design. I brought in deliverables that would illustrate the physical establishment. The establishment’s original concept was a café built out of recycled materials, and that also sits above the sand to allow habitats to be created under the building’s structure. I wanted to visualize this idea as well as present the design beauty of the interior and exterior of the café.

| Social Presence

A very popular way of connection today is social media, especially to speak about environmental problems and possible solutions for them. I decided to create a social media presence for Crest Café. Not only to advertise the café further bringing customers in, but also to educate individuals scrolling through social media. This continues Crest Café’s mission to not only provide amazing food, but to also education passing individuals with information that could save the environment one step at a time.

| Conclusion

The world of sustainability and environmental impact is a vast one. While there were many different directions I could have gone in when focusing on this subject I really wanted to focus on the roots of it. I allowed myself to explore the ocean and the efforts it needs as well as the world altogether. My goal is to provide a sanctuary to the individuals who need that environmentally conscious business as well as to educate the ones that don’t think about this subject as much as they should. We’re going to be living on this earth for many years to come, it’s time we start taking care of it.
