Drunken Dove Tavern is a restaurant on a docked boat.

An establishment to bring brunch and dinner at sea to everyone. I wanted to create and elevate the idea of food and drinks at sea with a lively but chill atmosphere. I would bounce ideas off my professor Nathan Young. He would challenge me on which ways I can drive this idea down a successful path. I was trying to solve my initial designs and make sure that gave off the tranquil yet fun and exciting vibe I was going for.

I drew inspiration from restaurants in Newport and created a mood board of the colors, fonts, and details I wanted to integrate into my restaurant. I did various sketches based on two main elements, which were a duck and alcohol. I thought about ways I could intertwine those two things. I then thought that it would be cheeky and unthought-of if I incorporated a dove. A bird that is seen as elegant and graceful and combining it with alcohol, goes well with the witty and cheeky mood I wanted to set. Each time a different element would stick out to me. So I would stick with it and incorporate it into my next sketch. I always find it very helpful to resort back to sketching on paper. Feedback from other classmates and Nathan also aided my decision-making.

I experimented with various type faces but then finally decided that a hand-drawn logo pairs nicely with the illustration. It also captures the elements that I wanted the restaurant to represent.

In conclusion, Drunken Dove is a resturant idea that I really wanted to connect back to my home. Most resturants in Newport, Rhose island are very prcey and upscale. So I wanted to create something that gives people who might not be able to afford at those restaurants, a less pricey and a more casual experience. While working on this project, I learned how to take a more research based apporach by creating empathy maps and mood boards. I also realized that coming back after quarantine, I was greatly affected and had to get back to the routine of going to in-person classes.
