Surely the first day of Black History Month would be without drama, right? Right?! RIGHT??????!?!?!?!

*Finishes a 450-year-old sigh*

Let’s start on a positive note.

Remember Beychella? Because I do.

And just a reminder that the “Everybody Mad” dance sequence was the best minute of 2018.

Black “Batman” re-imagination

If you’re into Batman and loved the re-imagination of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse then you’ll love this Twitter thread by NYT opinion columnist, Jamelle Bouie.

Let’s make this happen.

Another beautiful Twitter thread

Twitter is bad for many reasons, but one area it shines is the ability to have genuine interactions with celebrities.

Update: Looks like the Vincent’s response tweet was deleted but good ol’ screenshots to the rescue:

Dreams can come true.

🤷🏻‍♂️A special “WTF White People?!” Report 👀

When you log onto Twitter and immediately see the “blackface” and “KKK” all over your feed you know it’s not good.

Someone discovered a photo from Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s 1984 medical school yearbook and… IT’S NOT GOOD!

Usually it’s blackface or a KKK photo, not both!

And I don’t know if this makes matters worse, but Ralph confirmed (in a letter) that he is in the picture above, but didn’t confirm if he was wearing the KKK costume or blackface.

You know what comes next, readers!

Ahhh yes, the ol’ “ emotionless apology read from a teleprompter” trick. He just thought he could give a bland statement and not resign and everything would just be cool.

Nah son.

Almost immediately, the NAACP, civil rights leaders, and prominent Democrats (yes! he’s a Democrat! Yes, Democrats can be racist, too!) started calling for his resignation. Here’s just the list of Democratic presidential candidates asking Northam to resign:

Just in case you’re wondering why he should resign:

  1. THIS IS VERY BAD. It doesn’t matter if it was 35 years ago. Blackface and the KKK are two of the most enduring symbols and weapons of the Jim Crow era. And he had both in the SAME picture. In his medical school yearbook!
  2. There is no way a Democrat can campaign in the state of Virginia while he’s in office. Virginia is a political battleground state for Democrats (Obama won the state in 2008 & 2012 and Clinton won in 2016). Having Northam in office would provide the Republicans with ample negative ad material and could swing the state.

If you don’t know Terry McAuliffe, he was the recent Democratic governor of Virginia. Before that he chaired Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign, was the Democratic National Committee chair from 2001–2005, and was the co-chair of President Clinton’s re-election campaign. So you could say his word carries some weight.

About 70 minutes after Northam’s canned apology video, this tweet dropped on the timeline:

You can’t spell “I’m sorry” without the letters “R E S I G N.”

Up Next

And who might be waiting in the wings when Northam resigns? Just Virginia’s Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax (you can’t make this up)! Fairfax made the news a couple weeks ago for protesting the tribute of General “Dude That Totally Got Werked in the Civil War” Robert E. Lee which, ya know, SEEMED LIKE THE RIGHT FUCKING THING TO DO.

He’s also only the second black person ever elected to a Virginia statewide office, which makes sense when your fellow state lawmakers STILL PAY TRIBUTE TO BOB “BAD AT WINNING BUT REALLY GOOD AT LOSING” LEE.

Let’s hope Northam comes to his senses tomorrow morning and paves the way new leadership in Virginia.

Must-watch: Ellen Page on The Late Show

And props to Stephen Colbert for giving her the space to deliver this genuine speech on national television.

After the last month of talk show TV rolling over for Kevin Hart, it’s good to see real emotions and thought-provoking words on basic cable.

Let’s switch gears and start digging into your life, ok?

If you think you have a lot of tabs open on your desktop or laptop browser, imagine how many you have open on your mobile phone. Well, if you have an iPhone, you can find out exactly how many tabs you do have open thanks to this tweet:

I followed the instructions and what I found is astonishing:

Honestly, I blame Apple. It’s so damn hard to find tabs on the mobile Safari browser that I probably have 25 tabs of the same website! If any of you beat 500, I want to see it.

IG Extreme Weather Edition

On one hand, you have to admire this woman’s persistence but on the other hand… IT’S REALLY COLD BECAUSE SHE’S BEEN OUTSIDE FOR THIRTY MINUTES.

I don’t know if her IG story was worth it, but I know this cold weather post was:

I don’t have a great transition for this next story, so all I can say is that it’s extremely close to my heart:

Flats over everything.

It’s Time For Some #GoodContent

Congrats to Julius Peppers on his retirement of after a 17-year Hall of Fame NFL career. He’s fourth all-time in sacks and one of the greatest all-around athletes in sports. He’s also a really great guy.

When the finesse goes wrong

We end tonight’s TYML Daily with a two parts hilarious and one part sad story. This New Jersey man is fed up with his job (and life?) and attempts to hit the workers comp jackpot. Unfortunately, he couldn’t fully commit to the plan and… there was a camera in the room 🤦🏿‍♂️

Hey, at least you went viral! However, there’s no retirement benefits that come with the fame.

That’s all I have for this week! If you enjoyed this post…

Have a great weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday!
