How would you feel if an AI spoke something in your voice that you have never spoken before? Voice cloning has always been controversial, whether it’s good or bad. Cloning Anthony Bourdain’s voice has been harshly criticized while cloning Val Kilmer’s voice has been praised by many people. Although the comparison between Anthony Bourdain and Val Kilmer does not make sense because the background and reason why they decided to recreate someone else’s voice are completely different, voice cloning benefits us.

Let us look at how voice cloning benefits us (even though you’re not a celebrity) and why we need voice cloning technology.

1. By cloning voices, your loved ones can stay by your side even after death

In the Black Mirror episode “Be Right Back”, her dead husband was virtually brought to life.

No one prepares to say goodbye to their loved ones, and sometimes the moment we need to say goodbye comes too soon or too suddenly. You do not even have to worry about recording your loved one’s voice in a studio to clone it. There is no special sauce, and all you have to do is let them sit for an hour or even 30 minutes to record their voice on their phone. After you generate the AI voices, you can listen to them whenever you want and if you miss them too much.

2. Cloning celebrities’ voices is not only fun but also lucrative.

Celebrity text-to-speech or celebrity voice-over is one of the popular AI voice keywords people search for. Celebrity voice cloning applications are popular among celebrities as well as their fans. The celebrities can make more money with less effort, and their fans can use the voices of their favorite celebrities and feel like they are closer to the stars.

Morgan Freeman speaks Korean, even though he does not speak Korean in real life.

3. Do you have children? You can clone voices when reading bedtime stories to them.

You may think that voice cloning is only for people with money or fame. Who would want my voice cloned and used? Well, your kids love to hear your voice, and your last job of the day is to read bedtime stories to your kids. Even if your AI voice cannot immediately answer what your kids are curious about, you do not have to worry about reading bedtime stories when you are not feeling well.

The takeaway

There are two sides to everything, and so it is with voice cloning. If it’s so easy to clone someone’s voice, what if someone is spreading misinformation using the voice of an authority figure? What if someone clones a family member’s voice and charges money for it? There are so many different and incredibly devious ways to abuse this new technology, but looking on the bright side, there’s no harm in using it in a good way.
