What do you do when you feel like ice cream, but want something that seems healthier? Eat frozen yoghurt! This delicious treat is calcium-filled but typically less fatty. Froyo’s specialty is not only big in America, but also in South Africa. Here is a guide to frozen yoghurt in South Africa.

Menchies

This popular international franchise has branches in South Africa as well. Menchies offers a wide variety of flavours, including chocolate, coconut and peanut butter. Delicious toppings are also available.

Wakaberry

As far as frozen yoghurt bars go, Wakaberry is probably the most popular frozen yoghurt bar in South Africa. Ask any South African for a good place to get frozen yoghurt and the answer is likely to be “Wakaberry!”. This frozen yoghurt bar also hosts Waka Parties for children aged 14 and younger.

Marcel’s

Marcel’s is another popular frozen yoghurt franchise. Established in 1989 by Stellenbosch’s Marcel van der Westhuizen, Marcel’s has stores nationwide and also supplies frozen yoghurt to supermarkets like Spar. Marcel’s has four staple flavours — chocolate, English toffee, strawberry and vanilla — and another option that alternates between litchi, nougat, turkish delight, summer berries and others.

Myog

Myog is relatively new in South Africa, and only has three shops at the moment (two in Cape Town, one in Stellenbosch). The owners wanted to offer something new in marketplace, and so they did — besides the standard plain frozen yoghurt, they also have more abstract flavours like cinnamon and avocado. Another point of difference is that Myog prioritise sustainability and give back to the community through the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA).
