I plan to move to another city in early 2019. There, I will try to work in a startup or the nearest university (1h distance by car). I also have a few other plans to implement in the city. I live in Lisbon (Portugal’s capital) since I was born. I love Lisbon, I was lucky to grow up here — this is not a regionalism issue — there so many opportunities, so much to see. Nevertheless, I will move to a smaller city in the south of Portugal. Lisbon is too expensive, and I want to try a different lifestyle, less chaos, less traffic, cheaper houses, etc.

The south of Portugal, which is called Algarve, is composed of several cities. Some of them are small cities, others are cities with huge houses of rich people, retired foreigners, etc. The town where I will go is a mixture of both worlds. I have a vast infrastructure, buildings, malls, hospital, court, etc., and at the same time, it has two density times (as almost every city in Algarve). During the winter it is calm and during the summer is total chaos. However, this has been changing, more often we see the winter population growing.

Although there are a few cultural groups that promote the cultural activities of the city, it has a poor cultural offer — when compared to Lisbon, of course. However, one of the great things in Algarve is that the whole region of “small cities” often works as a big city. Therefore, it is a breeding ground to promote cooperation between cities and communities.

I see the lack of offers as an opportunity to exploit new activities, promote new habits that will benefit the whole community. From what I am observing there are a few people that have great ideas, and I truly believe that it is possible to implement a cultural ecosystem that lasts for the whole year, for the locals (Portuguese and retired foreigners) and tourists (during the summer).

One of my ideas is to implement a film club in the city. There two cinemas, an old one with few conditions that compete against another that is in the mall (2mins walking distance). Both invest in mainstream movies. Therefore there is a lack of independent movies. I want to explore the cinema network in Portugal in such a way that we can minimize the rights acquisition costs and create a new place to watch a different type of cinema.

I have other ideas related to food, tech, etc. I think that there are a lot of opportunities that must be exploited while there is money being invested there and space to create things.
