Ualá: a brief story of how it became a leader of quantum computing in the region
A couple of months ago, I shared with Pierpaolo Barbieri, Ualá founder, the possibility of being a leader in quantum computing in the region.
He just answered me: “Make your vision a reality”.
So…here we are.
How did we make it?
Frankly, it wasn’t so hard. Quantum computing is fully entangled with Ualá technology vision: provide the best financial services with the most innovative technology.
But although we were vision-centered, it didn’t mean we wouldn’t be facing some difficulties. Our developer team had to learn a new and cutting-edge technology. With the contribution of my peer Ezekiel, every day we challenged ourselves to achieve our vision.
In our investigation and experimentation, we’ve learnt that when you set off to climb through the top of the pyramid of knowledge, the edges start to shrink. Hence, so does the community of experts.
When this happens, one may feel lonely, and demotivation starts to arise. However, none of this happens if one candidly believes in the vision. And we did it.
In this journey, we’ve found the best companion anyone can have for this technology: the experts at AWS. Led by Francisco Pepe, we set up an excellent team where synergy was thick on the ground.
We started to blend in with his team of experts and consequently our vision began to be clearer: worldwide referrers in QC like Grant Salton or Juan Moreno (top of the top in QC, truly believers of its advantages as we do) with their truly kindness and professionalism helped us to achieve our vision.
And even though we were entering on an unexplored area of quantum computing (or at least in laboratory state), they were extremely wide-open in giving us support. They believed in our vision.
Having this in mind, we couldn’t fail. And that’s something I’ve already learnt in my experience in Ualá: the best team makes the best product.
The machinery behind all
In a couple of months, having experienced the technology with different use cases in financial services, we ended up implementing a new security method in our authentication services using quantum computing advantages.
That’s all I can say about it. I won’t talk about the implementation, in the same way, a classical bank won’t tell you how its vault works, but I can tell you that we couldn’t make it without a great talented team who supported our vision with their cutting-edge quantum computing software and hardware.
Services like Amazon Braket provided us a 24x7 availability of quantum computing with a simple SDK and quick deployment process which ended up being the cornerstone of our quantum initiatives.

With our objective accomplished, we'll keep fostering the whole financial community with our experience and paving the way to the future of quantum financial services.
