Canadians are crazy about a lot of things: double-doubles, maple-glazed doughnuts, Kraft Dinner, saying sorry and, of course, skating and playing hockey. Being able to glide across the ice on your blades isn’t mandatory in this country, but it’s close.

Whether you’re new to Canada or new to the ice, you have to skate before you can play. But if you follow these few simple steps and practice, you’ll be at home on your local rink or frozen pond in no time.

Rebecca Marsh from Campus & Community Recreation offers helpful tips in how to lace up, protect your head, get onto the ice, take a fall, glide and come to a stop.
