Orlando Uber Partners and Community Leaders Call on Legislature to Support Work on Demand Opportunities Statewide

Last Friday, we were joined by Florida Reps. Randolph Bracy (D-Ocoee) and Mike Miller (R-Winter Park), the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Latino Leadership, and hundreds of Orlando area driver-partners to kick off our first-ever Florida ‘Work on Demand’ event. The event highlighted the impact flexible Work on Demand opportunities are having in the Orlando area and Florida economies.

“What I like most about Uber is the flexibility, it allows drivers to make money on their own time. I don’t have a boss to report to. I don’t have to be ‘on schedule.’ I work when I want,” said Mary Valenzuela, an Uber driver-partner. “As a single mother, Uber allows me to support my son and be flexible when something unexpected comes up. The best part is I don’t have to ask for permission — I just do it!”

Ms. Valenzuela touted the flexibility offered by the Uber platform, while state policymakers and community action groups highlighted the impact Uber is having on the local economy and the valuable transportation services these local entrepreneurs provide.

“Uber is helping to empower local entrepreneurs here in Orlando and across the Sunshine State with flexible work opportunities — the ability to set their own schedule, be their own boss, and work on their own terms,” said Matt Gore, General Manager for Uber in Florida. “With sensible, statewide legislation, we can permanently secure these opportunities for drivers here in Orlando and throughout Florida.”

“We want to make sure you all can continue to have an environment where you know what you are doing, where you can get paid on your own time, and that we have the regulatory framework, not to make it harder, but to make it easier,” said Rep. Miller.

“Today’s Work on Demand event showed us that Orlando residents want this service, both as a safe transportation option and as an opportunity to support their families on their own terms,” said Rep. Bracy.
