Last week, we partnered with San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor and Brooks City Base for our inaugural “Work on Demand” event.

“As Mayor, one of my top priorities is to connect people to opportunities, and Uber does just that,” said Mayor Ivy Taylor.

At the event, driver-partners shared their stories, brought friends and family to sign up to drive, and celebrated veterans and military families as part of our UberMILITARY program. Over 500current and prospective drivers attended the event to offer insight into the many benefits of working on demand. We also made a pledge to sign up 10,000 new driver-partners in San Antonio in 2016.

“I signed up to drive with Uber because of the flexibility it offers,” said UberMILITARY partner Elizabeth Fullenwider. “When something important happens, I don’t have to ask permission or explain my busy life to a boss. I can earn money whenever it’s convenient for me, so I can focus on caring for my father, husband, and children.”

Last year, we launched UberMILITARY, a program to introduce service members, veterans and military spouses to Uber and empower them as entrepreneurs and small business owners. Currently, there are more than 600 UberMILITARY drivers in San Antonio. As part of this new initiative, we are partnering with community-based organizations, including Brooks City Base, to help more UberMILITARY partners get on the road.

Prior to joining the team, Uber San Antonio Operations and Logistics Manager Alex Hooper served as an Army Green Beret. Hooper said, “As a former soldier, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to transition from military to civilian life. Having the flexibility to work on demand, when, and where you want is a welcomed innovation for veterans and military families”

Brooks City Base Chairman Manuel Villa said, “We look forward to our partnership with Uber, and helping create a better San Antonio for residents and visitors alike.
