Digital Nervous System — The Testbed that has been a test for me
How the DNS Testbed can be compared to my beginning at Ubiwhere.
It’s true, Ubiwhere leads 1 of the 30 Testbeds that constitute the National Testbeds Network. The Office of the Secretary of State for Digitisation and Administrative Modernisation announced it nearly a month ago. Almost at the same moment, I joined Ubiwhere.
With great enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility, I started my journey at Ubiwhere with such a challenging project. The Digital Nervous System (DNS) Testbed by Ubiwhere, a testbed of excellence, will lead innovation processes in several companies, creating more than a hundred new technological products. In other words, the DNS Testbed will take Portuguese SMEs and startups of different sectors, such as smart cities, industry, TELCO, TICE, construction, energy, tourism, health, media, mobility and environment, to the next level in terms of implementing new technologies by providing access to a “marketplace” of technological services.
Companies that decide to join our Testbed will not only have access to these technological services at a price below market but will also benefit from a team of experts who will share knowledge and offer guidance through the whole process, making it easier and faster for products and services to become commercially viable. By shortening their innovation cycle, particularly in the transition from laboratory validation (technological readiness level: TRL 4) to the commercialization phase (TRL 9 level), companies will be able to avoid the risk of the well-known “valley of death”.
DNS Testbed Services
- Interoperability of technologies and communication protocols
- IoT platform with device registration and data delivery monitoring capabilities for different decentralised applications
- Container-based workloads installation
- Continuous and automatic integration and installation (CI/CD) platform, verification and validation of the developed applications
- Embedded systems in the network edge layer
- Mentoring on applicational design and architecture of applications capable of scaling
- Interoperability and information sovereignty
- Data lakes to support the extraction of analytics from large amounts of data
- Network orchestration
- Life Cycle Management for service discovery and observability
- Real-time analytics at the network edge for data pre-processing
- Analytics at the core service for decision making
- Security and privacy services for device communications on the network
Above all, the DNS Testbed represents an incredible opportunity for SMEs and startups that have great ideas but do not have the means to achieve them. Ultimately it brings more equity to the players in the market by offering cutting-edge technology at an affordable price. Furthermore, the DNS Testbed contributes to the concept of a connected world, one of Ubiwheres’s areas of interest for the past few years reflected on the Forecast Connected Everything 2023.
It is quite a coincidence that this first project I am collaborating with is called a testbed since I consider the project itself a testbed for me. And honestly, I could not have asked for a better team of experts and better work conditions to help me achieve the success I claim for this project and myself. Although my goal is not to become “a product or service commercially viable” but to ensure we deliver better than expected.
