Assessing Smart Tourism can be an engaging adventure.

Simão Sil, Marketing and Communication Intern at Ubiwhere.

As a student about to finish his Master’s degree, I have always had a passion for Management, Marketing and Communications. I have always enjoyed a good challenge, so I accepted an internship at Ubiwhere, a disruptive company specialising in technological solutions for Smart Cities, Telecommunications and the Internet of the Future.

When I joined Ubiwhere, there was a great interest in developing a value proposition and positioning strategy for the Smart Tourism segment. This ambitious goal played a significant role in my internship program, which proved to be a great journey and a landmark in my career path.

The role of tourism as a driver for the sustainable development of communities has been debated over the years. The constant evolution of technology has led to the rapid growth of the tourism industry, introducing a new concept: Smart Tourism.

This concept can be summarised in one simple phrase: Addressing the gap between tourism and technology. However, more than fancy gadgets and cutting-edge expertise is needed: travel is, at its core, human-centric! It is all about the experience and how both tourists and operators interact with each other.

As such, we have developed a brand concept that aims to represent what we bring to the table of the Smart Tourism segment. We called it Tourism 360º.

Tourism 360º is Ubiwhere’s focus on the Smart Tourism sector: a catalogue of technological solutions to enrich tourists’ experiences before, during and after their trips. It aims to promote cooperation between the various local economic agents and stakeholders to ensure conditions to meet demand, adapt the tourist offer to the target audience, optimise operations and provide the best possible tourist experiences. Tourism 360º considers that this industry presents a strong potential for the economic and social development of territories and an opportunity for the effective guidance of strategic decision-makers. Combining technology and sustainability, this brand enables the creation of cutting-edge integrated solutions with high social impact.

Promotional and cooperative descriptions aside, being involved in this project was an adventure. If I had to choose a word to describe my internship experience, it would be “dynamic”.

Since day one, I have adopted a hands-on approach towards various tasks: from strategic planning to content creation, I developed plenty of brand-new materials for Tourism 360º. I mapped out a detailed strategy guide for its branding and value proposition. Moreover, I tested my copywriting skills and creativity by developing a promotional brochure and online content such as articles and website entries.

Aside from core tasks related to this concept, I was directly involved in several Smart Tourism projects on marketing-related activities. For this reason, I had to blend my editing, planning and technical skills, significantly improving my problem-solving ability. During my internship, I also had the opportunity to travel to exotic locations such as Barcelona and the Portuguese countryside, working on events and representing Ubiwhere at a major international conference: Mobile World Congress 2023!

The best representation of my work at Ubiwhere, most specifically on Tourism 360º, is Forecast Smart Tourism 2023, a detailed review of this industry and its trends and technologies. This ebook aims to promote Ubiwhere’s catalogue of services and projects and analyse this market’s current situation. If you want to know more about this subject, I recommend downloading it from the company’s website. Quite a good read!

Now, at the final stage of this program and my degree, I can proudly say that this experience helped me grow. This journey taught me resilience and increased my drive to know more about marketing and the tourism sector. It also helped me understand what I want to pursue as a career.

Now, as an official member of the Ubiwhere team, I am ready to embark on new challenges and adventures, looking for innovative projects to join.
