The School of Information and Communication Studies at UCD would like to advertise three Spring 2020 modules that are open for those who are interested in continuing professional development opportunities (LAI credit for CPD is pending). These modules are an excellent way to enhance your knowledge of cutting-edge topics in the field of information. You are not required to submit assignments, just participate and engage!

Information Professional as Teacher (Dr Claire McGuinness Claire.mcguinness@ucd.ie):

This module is aimed at information professionals and para-professionals in all sectors and at all levels, who are fulfilling, or wish to fulfil, an educational role in any context. The module introduces students to the theoretical foundations of teaching and learning, and covers practical teaching strategies and approaches, in addition to the strategic, organisational and promotional aspects of instruction and training in information services. Students learn about the planning, design, creation, delivery, assessment and promotion of instructional programmes in multiple media and formats, with the aim of preparing them to facilitate effective learning opportunities in all information sectors.

Fridays, 24 January-6 March; 27 March-24 April (10–11:50)

People, Information & Communication: Our Information Behaviour (Dr Crystal Fulton crystal.fulton@ucd.ie)

In this seminar module, students explore theoretical foundations and research regarding how people interact with people and information, importantly including how they identify, access, create, communicate or share, and use information. In addition, they consider how theories and research results apply to the design of effective information services and information systems in a variety of contexts, e.g., workplace, educational, health care, personal, and leisure settings.

IMPORTANT NOTES: Because this module is offered synchronously online, students must
a) commit to active, weekly online engagement; and
b) ensure they have access to a computer with functioning audio & webcam set up for effective online participation.

Tuesdays, 21 January-3 March; 24 March-21 April (15:00–16:50)

Scholarly Communication (Dr Lai Ma lai.ma@ucd.ie)

This module examines the ways in which scholarly work is produced, disseminated, evaluated, and preserved in academic and research institutions. Students will be introduced to topics including print and digital publishing, research impact, copyright, open access, and research evaluation. This module would be of interest to those pursuing a career in research support roles in academic libraries and research councils, as well as doctoral students in all disciplines.

Fridays, 24 January-6 March; 27 March-24 April (13:00–14:50)

Fees for each module:

Waged/LAI Members: €400

Unwaged: €200
