How well does ChatGPT write a Medium-style article?
I asked ChatGPT to write me an article on a specific topic, and here are my thoughts.
By now, we’re all aware of ChatGPT’s impact on the way we interact with technology and information. For some, it’s been a digital companion in generating written content. But as many have noticed, it’s not the best at giving readable, “human” content.
I wanted to push the capabilities of ChatGPT’s written responses by having it write me an article on a topic of my choosing. This was an assignment for one of my classes in my grad program, and I’d like to share the results. First, I asked ChatGPT if it knew how articles in Medium were written. After confirming the layout of the article it gave me, I proceeded to give it the following outline:
“Give me an article similar to how Medium writes their articles. Make sure it’s less than a 6 minute read. Include the following:
- Engaging and compelling argumentation that has appeal to a popular audience
- Clear and logical argumentation that makes intuitive sense to a popular audience
- Clear statement about the importance of the topic to the UX community
- Persuasive use of images, graphs, or other visual elements
- Summary and demonstration of the integration of AI tools into work

Introduction — Brief description of how AI is incorporated into music composition. Transition into the ethical ramifications of using AI generated music.
Paragraph 1 — Talk about some of the biggest concerns around AI generated music. First, talk about how the music that’s being used in the AI’s database when it’s being trained isn’t always free of copyright.
Paragraph 2 — Next, talk about the concerns of how the generated music is credited.
Paragraph 3 — Lastly, talk about what the role of AI is in terms of creativity in this case.
Conclusion — Discuss the long-term cultural impact of AI generated music. Provide a way we can alleviate the aforementioned concerns in the future.”
The first five points are copied directly from the assignment page. This is to make sure that ChatGPT hit all of the major points (other than the use of imagery), and that I didn’t have to edit as much afterwards. I wanted it to be roughly a 6-minute read, but I later found out that there was a character limit in ChatGPT’s responses, which was about 600–700 words. After I got the initial response, I asked it to give me more information about each section. I spread out these prompts over multiple messages so that I wouldn’t be limited to its built-in word limit. The total word count came to a little less than 1700.
The content I gave was the main points I argued in my previous assignments for the course. In one of them, I mentioned the ethical concerns in AI-generated music composition, and in another assignment, I created a conceptual model of an app that uses AI to generate music based on human input. I used the points in my literature review as the basis for my article. I separated each point into its own “paragraph” (really it’s a whole section) so that ChatGPT could elaborate on them more. I then added an introduction and conclusion to tie everything together.
I was really impressed with the article it gave me, and felt that it hit all of the major points I wanted. However, a lot of it was written in a formal language, and it was hard to read quickly. I spent most of my time editing the article to make it more digestible to the reader. I also utilized some of the advice written in the Medium articles given in the assignment. Some of which included:
- Make sure the article is written at a 6th grade level
- Sentences average at 10–15 words
- Sentence-case headings
- Add a call-to-action at the end of the article
- Keep the read time 6–7 minutes
- Use pictures to divide content and get the point across
When editing the article, I applied strikethroughs to the text that I wanted to delete, and added my text in bold to show my changes. For the most part, every paragraph needed to be edited in some way. Oftentimes, I was rewriting the text to make it easier to read. Other times, I was deleting large chunks of text because they were redundant or were filled with unnecessary jargon. One example of this was in the conclusion. Much of the text ChatGPT gave me was repetitive, so I combined the main points into one paragraph.
The time I spent editing this article could have been spent writing my own article from scratch. While I do believe it was helpful to have content already written, the amount of time I spent editing negates that feeling. Typically, my writing process involves making an outline of the points I want to hit, and then word-vomiting on the page for content. I later edit this text to make it coherent and succinct. This ends up being where a bulk of my effort goes.
In this case, ChatGPT provided the word-vomit for me. But I still needed to do the hard part of editing. I also needed to provide a somewhat detailed outline so that I knew that it was covering the points I wanted. To me, it felt like ChatGPT did the easiest part of my work, which didn’t really help with my overall writing process.
I also feel like I could have done a better job editing to better fit the style of a Medium article. I could have made the sentences simpler, but doing so meant that I couldn’t express the point of the sentence as easily. This was the hardest part, but it was a good challenge for me to write more concisely while still getting my point across.
