Technology is one of the most powerful and disruptive drivers of social change. But technology is only half the story; to actually leverage positive change, technical advances need to be integrated with our existing social structures. The bigger the change, the harder it is to achieve a harmonious transition.

Just like the internet forever changed human communication, artificial intelligence and other breakthroughs like blockchain and distributed ledger technologies are forcing us to rethink how we understand and organise our economic systems and utilise technology in financial services.

As financial technology advances, our existing institutions struggle to reconcile regulatory frameworks with new business models that were unthinkable only a few years ago. Without coordination and meaningful exchange of ideas, we risk stifling innovation and wasting precious resources in an endless tug-of-war in which everyone loses.

Much like the internet transcends traditional borders, incorporating entire new financial models into our existing systems require global collaboration across all sectors. We believe that leading a broad conversation is the best way to find a common ground.

That’s the vision behind the UCL CBT, and the driving force behind out flagship workshop on Peer-to-Peer Financial Systems: #P2PFISY.

What is #P2PFISY?

#P2PFISY is our contribution towards building a bridge between the promising future held by technology and the world of today. For one day, we bring together some of the top minds from academia, enterprise, regulators, and central banks under the same roof with a common goal: to better understand how to piece together a blueprint for the future of global finance.

Since its first edition in 2015, #P2PFISY has worked hand-in-hand with leading central banks to create an annual forum to exchange ideas and tackle the most pressing challenges. In broader terms this speaks to the multitude of challenges facing regulators worldwide. How do we manage risk without stifling innovation? Do we regulate proactively or reactively? In a noisy market, which opportunities signal long-term transformation?

By having a joint conversation, we aim to find ways to reap the most benefits from the new models, while minimising the social impact of technological disruption.

#P2PFISY 2019

We are proud to host #P2PFISY 2019 together with the European Central Bank.

Our focus this year will be the strategic debates surrounding decentralised finance, its impact on the financial ecosystem, and its role in the broader transformations being driven by FinTech and blockchain.

These are the main topics in discussion:

  1. Regulation and governance in decentralised systems: a discussion on how P2P systems can impact the current EU regulatory framework, and governance in a decentralised finance environment;
  2. An economic perspective on decentralisation in the financial environment: how decentralised finance can potentially disrupt the current financial landscape;
  3. New opportunities and challenges from decentralised systems: an outlook on which areas of finance could benefit the most from decentralised systems.

We have no doubts that a debate around these topics to be a step forward in aligning all sectors towards a common goal, facilitating collaboration and mutual understanding.

Call for papers: we want your ideas

No conversation is worth having without voices from all sides, and no future is worth building alone. That is why we need to hear from you. Your ideas can help shape the future.

The best way to participate is to have your say — and for that, we need papers to enrich the conversation. So if you are a researcher, policymaker, regulator, member of the industry, we want to hear your experience.

If you have policy-oriented, theoretical, or empirical papers with focus on one of this year’s themes, then this is your chance to share your knowledge.

This is all you need to do:

  1. Read the full submission guidelines on the #P2PFISY website;
  2. Send your abstract or full paper by May 31st to p2pfisy@cs.ucl.ac.uk
  3. Wait for a decision by June 7th

Alternatively, if you are a member of industry, government or academia and would like to take part, you can express your interest in the #P2PFISY 2019 website. A limited number of attendees will be considered by the selecting committee.

The workshop will take place in Frankfurt, Germany, on the 26th of July. Attendance will be exclusive to the authors of selected papers, invited speakers, and selected applicants who have expressed their interest on the website.
