Back in 2002, the efforts to contain SARS inadvertently gave a boost to innovations like Alibaba. Something similar may happen again in Australia.

During times of great crisis, the systems that power the world get tested to its extremes. We realise that we often take things for granted (like toilet paper in Australia apparently) and we begin to see just how bad the cracks in our systems were now that they have been blown wide open.

For example, the supply chain has been severely disrupted due to this suddenly triggered hamsterkauf (a German term for panic hoarding) and it is interesting to look at how we can smooth over these disruptions with new innovation.

Australia has been showing impressive results during this outbreak, with scientists in Melbourne being the first in the world to recreate the virus in their labs. There are companies coming forward with new prevention methods and products such as Firebrick Pharma’s Nasodine, another Australian company.

Recently, UCOT Australia Pty Ltd has launched commercial cooperation with a fellow Australian company, UPCare who are currently in the testing phase of UPplus UPplus Spray which has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia as a broad spectrum anti-respiratory spray.

To ensure that this product line reaches consumers safe and sound, UCOT has brought in their blockchain solution. Each product unit will have a QR code which, when scanned, contains product information and purchase links. Consumers will also be able to obtain key information to check product provenance as well as its journey to ensure that it has been stored in optimal temperatures to ensure that the spray remains as effective as intended when manufactured.

All this data is kept on UCOT’s blockchain which ensures that any uploaded information is stored securely and cannot be tampered with.

The first batch of UPplus has already arrived and undergoing clinical trials in Wuhan. It is anticipated that after further testing, this product will soon be available to the market to help control COVID-19.

UCOT hopes that this is only the beginning of the ways their technology can help with this world crisis which is in line with their mission to give back to society and empower the consumer by ensuring their safety with products.

Batch production and processing of UPplus featuring UCOT’s blockchain-enabled tags are expected to begin in late March.
