Treat Yourself To New Skills!
Skills are valuable things. With them, you can create, build, accomplish. In a barter system environment, you can trade them for goods, parlay them into opportunities, establishing ongoing and mutual beneficial service-based relationships. Choose wisely which ones you learn, and they can earn you fame, prestige, opportunity.
Skills also get you hired. Companies need you to have them. Recruiters find you if you have them. People pay you if you have them.
Note: Changing technologies also require that you update existing skills, and and new ones!
This makes for a simple equation. The faster technologies change, the more often you should plan on a skills refresh. You may see these processes described as “skilling up” or “reskilling.”
Skilling Up
In this scenario, your existing skills are still relevant. You’ll still want to “maintain” those. But you’ll need to add some new ones as well.
Reskilling
In this scenario, some of your existing skills are no longer relevant. You’ll let those go, in favor of learning some other skills instead.
When you consider the empowerment that comes with skills mastery, it is easy to understand skills acquisition as a gift to yourself. That’s what Udacity Discovery Week is all about.
