Data Portability, Right?

Today we will explain the Data Portability Right! For simplicity, we’ll refer to it as the DPR. We cover prerequisites, problems, perspectives and the bright future in regards to the DPR — find everything below!
.
The DPR is basically an upgraded version of the Data Access Right: not only it gives you the right to get all your personal data, but it also specifies the purpose of getting the data — “to transmit those data to another controller” — you can get your data from anywhere and transfer it to anywhere you want to.
.
We want to take a look at the following number: in 2015 the average internet user had 90 accounts on different services, but by 2020 this number rose to 200. And these accounts in most of the cases share some data — name, last name, email. But in some of the cases they share almost all of it — how many email services or messengers do you have? So one of the points that the DPR addresses is Data Recycling: why input or generate the same data again and again where you can just reuse what you already have?
.
And the situation becomes more relevant if we take a look at data-driven services. A simple example is music streaming: have you ever tried to switch a provider? Today you lose all your playlists and recommendations — good luck with rebuilding your playlists by hands and listening to low-quality recommendations for weeks until their “rocket science machine learning” will understand what you like. Things get more serious if we think of a patient who has to switch hospitals to get treatment: today many medical institutions have special systems where the data about patients is collected. And guess what is happening with the data when the patient is switching the hospital? It stays in the previous hospital!
.
The DPR allows people, businesses, and institutions to leverage existing data and handle not only situations like mentioned above, but also facilitates the process of Market Democratization, it helps to break Data Monopolies (aka Data Silos) and increases users’ mobility among the services.
.
Have you ever exercised your Data Portability Right? Do you want to know more about how it facilitates Market Democratization and helps to break Data Silos?
