NewselaはEdTech分野のサービスを展開している、NY発のスタートアップです。下記のような標題がウェブサイトに掲げられています。

同名のサービスではニュース記事（英文）が5段階のレベル別で用意されており、読んだ後には小テストに取り組むことで読解度を確認することができます。現在（2016年7月）のところ、少なくとも個人ユーザは無料で利用できます。

彼らによると “There are more than 20 million U.S. students who are not reading at grade level” という実情があるらしく、Newselaはアメリカの学生を対象としていますが、一番上のレベルでも日本のセンター試験より少し難しい程度です。そのため日本の大学受験やTOEIC、英検等の対策に使えないこともなさそうです。

記事の対象はLawやMoneyといったものからScience、Health、Arts、Sportsなど多岐に渡っているため、自分の興味のあるものだけ読むこともできれば多方面に手を出して広く学ぶこともできます。ブラウザもしくはiOSアプリから利用できます。

通学・通勤の時間で少し英語長文の演習をしたいという人は試してみると良いかもしれません。

次に会社に目を向けてみます。

現時点では90人弱の社員がいるようです。investorはKleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers、Owl Ventures、Women’s Venture Capital Fundとなっています。

CEOがこのように述べていることから、今後は教育機関へのサービス導入によりマネタイズを目指していくものだと思われます。

また、以下のリンク先にはChief Content Officeなる役職のCoogan氏と記者の対談記事が掲載されています。内容は2年前と少し古いので今とは変わってしまっている部分もあるかもしれませんが、Newselaが言語学習においてどのように社会を変えようとしているのかということが読み取れます。Newselaに興味を持った方は一読してみると面白いと思います。
