This year NABJ had its very first NABJ week. Inspired by other NABJ chapters, we decided to serve our members a week jam-packed with events for five days straight focused on professional development. We began day one with college football reporter and analyst for SEC, Maria Taylor. On Tuesday we had a pizza fundraiser at Tate plaza. On Wednesday Jason Brady of CNN gave us tips on how to stand out in an interview, while Mandi Woodruff of Yahoo! gave us tips on how to make journalism a more lucrative career. As the grand finale, we collaborated with various organizations on campus for an networking event entitled “Cufflinks & Cocktails”.

Jason Brady, the manager of productions services at CNN, told us that one of our goals in an interview should be to show our personality. After our chat, we decided to take a silly photo to show a bit of our unique traits.

Despite being a Bulldog, I am far from a football fan, but meeting Maria Taylor was my favorite highlight of the week. As a Grady Grad, she gave us some advice about the world of sports journalism. I enjoyed Maria’s energy and down-to-earth personality. Through her funny stories, she proved to be very relatable. For example, she elaborated about how she forgot to on her microphone when she was being broadcasted on national television for the first time.

Maria Taylor provided advice for all Grady majors.

Maria gave excellent advice that everyone could benefit from. After the Q&A, Maria stayed around to take pictures with us and just talk a little bit.

Overall, I really enjoyed our first NABJ week as it got me excited for my future in journalism and to help plan more events for next year. Next year, I will be the vice president of our chapter and I can’t wait to continue serving our campus with top notch programs.
