In the media you mostly here about the bad that is associated with Greek Fraternities and Sororities. Did you know that every president of the United States and vice presidents, except two in each office, born since the first social fraternity was founded in 1825 have been members of a fraternity? The first female senator was Greek. Also, the first Black astronaut to travel in space was from the University of Houston and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. Greek organizations have high standards and have produced some great people.

Greek organization has been on college campus since the early 1800s. On the University of Houston’s campus was chartered in 1956. Greek life on campus was created based on the cultivation of young men and women to help them gain a sense of identity and also evolve leaders. They help build a lifetime bond within the organization and provide a safe haven between the brothers and sisters within the organization. Greek life on campus creates a sense of belonging. The bond created in college often goes on for a lifetime.

Majority of Greek organizations focus on community service and outreach. Within each organization, they hold multiple charity events and raise an awareness on a particular cause they feel is of importance. Community service has become the core of most Greek organizations. Members also mentor to younger generations to help mold them academically. Understanding the impact that Greek life has on the community helps to aid in how they can assist the communities around them become better and be fruitful.

Before a person can inquire about joining a Greek organization, he or she must first have the grade point average that is the standard. Greek life has been seen to increase the academic achievement. Within each Greek organization there is a minimum required grade point average to maintain in order to remain active within the organization. It creates a guideline for members to follow, while also upholding the standard. Rewarding academic achievement with scholarships motivate members to strive higher.

Even though the media portrays Greek life as all play and partying, majority of Greek life has to complete a certain number of study hall hours. They also created tutoring sessions for their members to help increase the academic success within. Majority of the people that are in the Greek organizations graduate because of the standards that they are upheld to.

They help evolve people into a better version of themselves, while also helping them network and uplift them into their career paths. Greek life on campus creates a sense of belonging. Greek life also helps you to perfect your skills and be presented in the best light. When national Greek conventions are held, alumni and present members attend. It gives that Greek a foot in the door on improvements and how to develop themselves into an overall rounded person.

Joining a fraternity or sorority can help one with becoming more socially confident. Each Greek organization holds social events to help evolve the organization and tightly web the bond. the benefits of the organization are always a plus when you have sown good seeds and have been an active member throughout.

Greek life also has had its fair share of negativity that has been broadcasted more often and placed in the light over their good deeds. Hazing is the act of presenting strenuous activities, causing one to feel ashamed. They are called rituals majority of the time. Regardless to what they are called, in Greek life, hazing is not tolerated but not everyone abides by laws and bylaws. There have been numerous of cases of recent of alleged hazing allegations. A cloud should not be over Greek organizations as a whole because individuals are doing bad things to others.

With anything there will always be good and bad. Sadly, some have lost their lives in Greek organizations, but Greek life is not all bad as the media may portray. Greeks on college campuses continue to strive, graduate and provide service in the public’s interest. Hopefully in the coming years some of the bad things that are part of some Greeks organizations will change. There is no doubt that Greeks are more good than bad, and very necessary for college campuses. In many of ways they set the bar for excellence for the entire student body.
