Douglas is known especially for it’s lengthy sweeping bay — lauded by Poet Laureate John Betjeman as the ‘Naples of theNorth’.

The town itself is the capital of the Isle of Man and has been a very popular holiday resort since Victorian times.

An older, yachtsman’s, travel guide has it thus: ‘Approaching from the sea you could be coming into Weymouth, Bridlington or any of a number of similar Victorian seaside towns; broad sandy beach backed by a wide promenade and behind that tall nineteenth century houses which have been converted into apartments, hotels, B&Bs and interspersed with amusement arcades and souvenir shops; it’s all here, risqué postcards, Isle of Man rock, T-shirts and fish and chips!!’

Douglas nowadays is a unique blend of holiday resort, finance centre and working harbour, offering the visitor a wealth of things to do. The impressive two-mile sweep of the bay is home to a vibrant town. Its main shopping area behind Loch Promenade boasts many well-known UK High Street stores and a host of independents. Befitting a capital, Douglas offers a selection of good quality hotels, guest houses and restaurants and the regeneration of the town’s inner harbour has seen the creation of a yacht marina and pleasant quayside area.
