28th February, 2022

People keeping warm, waiting to work out what to do next at one of the many Ukraine-Polish border crossings.

Back on the road again, I started to get tired and we camped in the boot in a side lane for a six hour kip. Rejuvenated and with adrenalin pumping we jumped back behind the wheel and decided to head to another border, Hrebenne, to see what was going on there.

By this time, Yuliya and myself had explored Facebook and found many groups for the refugees arranging rides, transport and accommodation. Volunteers were starting to create some law and order and were slowly developing a systematic approach to this ordeal.

We captured some more images and spoke to refugees, immersing ourselves amongst the folks.

Suddenly, Yuliya’s phone rang. It was always quite nerve racking because we were all worried about her father being back in the service. I saw the concern in her eyes while listened to her speaking Ukrainian without any understanding, trying to read her body language and gestures as I’m sure they would be the key indicators to any sudden bad news. She cupped the phone and said her cousin and four-year-old child needed to get out as they are worried and planning to leave. I said “heck yes, where and when babe?”. They were all the way down south in the hills, the likely place to go without lines was through the Slovakia border. I asked the family if they could get a friend to meet us half way as we were up for another 6–7 hour drive, they agreed.

We were off in a jiffy, on route to Krosno which is just shy of the Slovakia border.

We met her family there not to long after, made them comfortable in the car and weaved and bumped over the unsealed roads back to the safety of Warsaw…
