How Ultiverse is Utilizing Unreal Engine 5 to Build the Next-Gen Metaverse

As Ultiverse continues on our path to build the bridge between the metaverse and traditional gaming, there are various key foundational points that must be addressed and met in order to achieve our vision of a AAA quality immersive world that is integrated with Web3. One of those keys is graphical fidelity, so let’s explore the game changer that is Unreal Engine 5 and how it’s empowering our team to build a Next-Gen experience on blockchain.

What is Unreal Engine?

Unreal Engine is a video and computer game development framework and environment that saw its first iteration in 1998 and has become increasingly popular with both indie developers and AAA studios alike. Another way to look at it is that Unreal Engine is a suite of tools that developers use to create and manipulate the visuals, sounds, physics and other aspects of a 3D production.

The engine has seen multiple iterations over the years, with each version improving it and adding various new features for developers to utilize in creating virtual worlds. Unreal Engine 5 is the most capable and integrated engine released yet, merging state of the art graphics and visual design together with audio, dynamic lightning and animations.

Unreal Engine 5 is also better optimized that previous iterations, ensuring that players will be able to experience Ultiverse without having to own a high end gaming laptop with the latest graphics card.

Let’s detail a few of the specific features and systems within Unreal Engine 5 and how they are being utilized for the development of Terminus and Endless Loop for Ultiverse.


Whether it is the metaverse hub of Terminus or the multitude of expansive worlds begging for exploration in Endless Loop, realistic lighting is a key factor in creating an immersive gameplay experience for players.

Lumen is the new global illumination system in Unreal Engine 5 that allows for our team to create ultra realistic lighting that dynamically interacts with everything present in an environment from a rising alien sun in Endless Loop to smaller details such as a light fixture in one of the NFT galleries in Terminus.


Nanite is the virtual geometry system within Unreal Engine 5 and offers substantial advantages when it comes to designing vast environments that possess massive amounts of details as seen in Endless Loop. It allows for real world environments and topography to be scanned and brought into Ultiverse which enables us to achieve a photo realistic image without sacrificing in-game performance such as the frame rate.

Mass AI

Till now, we’ve focused on graphics but there are also new features that will greatly improve the realism of the gameplay within Ultiverse. The new Mass AI system allows for dynamic NPC characters in an open world setting where each has its own simulations running regardless of where the player is located. Resulting in the creatures and characters within Ultiverse being much more lifelike and dynamic, greatly adding to the immersion of the player.
