Obtaining resident status using a cryptocurrency issued by the government of the Central African Republic in July violates the country’s constitution.

The Constitutional Court of the Central African Republic has ruled that buying citizenship, an “e-Residence Permit” and land using a cryptocurrency launched by the government last month is unconstitutional, Reuters reports.

On July 25, the preliminary sale (ICO) of the new Sango Coin cryptocurrency began in the Central African Republic as part of the state program for the development of a digital monetary system. Also, a project was launched to provide citizenship of the country, residency and land plots secured by new tokens. The amount of the deposit for citizenship is $60,000, and for e-residency is $6,000.

On August 29, the country’s highest court found such deals unconstitutional. The ruling states that citizenship has no market value and residency requires a person to be physically present in the Central African Republic.

At the end of April, the Central African Republic adopted bitcoin as a means of payment, and became the second country in the world, after El Salvador, where the same decision was made in September 2021. According to representatives of the government of an African country, cryptocurrencies will allow it to overcome the existing obstacles to obtaining funding.
