Potato/Potahto…Scheißegal

Germans are super particular about their potato usage.

WHAT THE HELL DO I USE???????? THEY ALL LOOK THE FREAKING SAME!

This is the “varity” of potatoes you get in Germany. No, seriously. They generally do not go by names of what actual potato name is but a description of either how you cook them or their features. Not kidding.

Looking at these taters can you actually tell the difference between what they “should” be used for? My hubs is very specific about what type of potato he uses for what purpose. Lord have mercy on my ignorant American soul if I come home with frying potatoes and not boiling potatoes when he wants to make mashed. If you are interested in learning more about which potato is used for what please visit this link. I am not retyping all of this crap.

Russets

Perhaps I grew up in a household where we were not overly concerned about what type of potato we were using. Russet potatoes were the staple in my house. They were used for everything, for the most part, unless we wanted to eat them boiled with the skin on. Then we used New Potatoes, which happen to look like every freaking potato you see in Germany.

New potatoes in the USA.

New potatoes are a thing in Germany. You will notice that one of those potatoes in my lovely graphic is called “Frühkartoffeln.” That would be their version of the American “new potato.” The rest, according to Germans, are NOT new potatoes.

Perhaps these are also not all New Potatoes and we, as a society, have been living a lie for hundreds of years!

Don’t tell my husband but I have actually used frying potatoes for boiling and boiling potatoes for frying and he can never tell the difference once the potato is cooked. Am I evil? Do Germans have Frühkartoffeln up their butts?

Perhaps both.
