Jen Choe, a senior community health and biology major in the Korean Student Association, said the KSA recently met to plan a Valentine’s cupcake bake sale. The KSA will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Red Cross.
“Our primary job as students is to be students,” Choe said. “I think that the mere fact that student groups are investing efforts in helping even a month after the tragedy is still admirable and something to be respected.”
Kappa Phi Lambda held an ice skating fundraiser, “Break the Ice,” through which a “major portion of [the] proceeds” was donated to Haiti relief efforts after sisters heard about the incident, according to Helen Paik, a junior animal sciences major.
Paik also said that the sorority is planning a bake sale in April. She said that this might remind people to continue to donate after “the press and hype has died down.”
The Indian Student Association recently sold out of tickets for its ISA Charity Dinner. The dinner, rescheduled due to record-breaking snowfall, will donate proceeds to Doctors Without Borders in Haiti.
While the Asian American Student Union has not done anything yet, the executive board planned to attend the ISA Charity Dinner, and is in the process of planning the annual Curtain Call, a coffeehouse event where proceeds may be donated to Haiti.
George Yeh, a senior physiology and neurobiology major and president of the AASU, acknowledged that the aid is late in coming, but he said it was “basic humanity” to do something for the cause. He also noted the proceeds of this year’s Wiffleball Tournament will go toward Haiti.
Choe said that student relief efforts were not coming in too late, especially given that campus recently reopened.
“Expectations of when relief gets to Haiti has to be realistic,” Choe said.
